General Information for BSET Academy
Location: BSET Equine Academy is situated in the Kwazulu Natal Midlands, one hours drive east of the coastal city of Durban , ten minutes north of Howick and twenty minutes from the provincial capital of Pietermaritzburg. BSET Academy is ideally situated in the heart of the thoroughbred breeding and horse racing industries and is central to all the equine breeding and sporting disciplines, especially those of showing, dressage, show jumping eventing and polo.
Climate: The summer months span through from October to March and are sub-tropical by nature. Winter runs from April to September and is characteristically dry and sunny with cold nights and frosty mornings. Due to the region's temperate climate, all equine activities are enjoyed throughout the year, with the exception of polo which is played through the winter season only.
Accommodation: BSET Academy students live on campus, and will share a well appointed fully furnished house on the property with each student having their own bedroom. Students have full access to a swimming pool and entertainment area on the property.
Meals: Meals are self catered by the students themselves. However a cooked breakfast is provided weekdays.
Domestic: All washing, laundry and cleaning functions are undertaken for the students by academy domestic staff.
Clothing: Students are required to wear blue jeans or blue jodhpurs and leather jodhpur boots, (Blundstones are very good www.aussiebushhats.com.au (order the Blundstone 500 or 550 boot) BSET Fleeces, shirts, caps and jackets are available for the students to purchase and are required for the course. BSET uniform is worn daily.
Personal Protective Equipment: Students are required to provide their own approved safety head gear. It is compulsory for a helmet to be worn at all times when riding. The wearing of body protectors is encouraged.
Health care: South Africa has an excellent and advanced private health care system. BSET Academy is a 10 minutes drive from the Howick Hospital and the doctors/dental rooms.
Insurance: All students are required to have a comprehensive medical and travel insurance.
Social activities: BSET Academy encourages students to experience and explore the region's attractions in their free time. It is within easy reach of some of Africa 's best wildlife parks and the warm beaches of our eastern seaboard, the Indian Ocean .
Locally, there is no shortage of restaurants, shopping, nightlife, outdoor pursuits and sporting events.
Communications: South Africa has an extensive and advanced cellular network system. Most students bring their own internet access with them (3G card etc) .
