July 2024 BSET Academy Blog
July has been a bustling and enriching month for everyone at BSET Academy. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights:
Polo Club Clinic: Exploring Equine Health
We kicked off the month with an exciting holiday polo club clinic where students received a comprehensive lecture from BSET Academy on horse biomechanics and equine health evaluation. They learned essential skills such as bandaging wounds and injuries, and the critical importance of monitoring Temperature, Pulse, and Respiration (TPR). These foundational skills are crucial for anyone involved in equine care and management.
Durban July Experience
On July 6th, Demi and Koni had the incredible opportunity to observe Birgit preparing some of the racehorses for the Durban July using ETT and SUMCHI Technique. Later, the students attended the Durban July race day, an event filled with excitement and unpredictability. The atmosphere was electric, providing a fantastic bonding experience and a chance for the students to witness the equine athletes in action.
Business Insights at Rivers Labour Consultants
July 4th was an insightful day for our second-year students, who went on a business outing to Rivers Labour Consultants. Hosted by Gerhard and Gordon, the session was both overwhelming and incredibly informative. The students gained a deep understanding of how an HR business operates and the various aspects involved. This exposure is invaluable for their future business prospects, showcasing the range of human resources, business intervention strategies, staff management, and solutions that Rivers provides.
Excitement at Scottsville Racecourse
On July 10th, our students visited Scottsville racecourse for an exhilarating race day. They observed the horses in the parade, watched them sprint in front of the grandstand, and even placed bets on their favorite horses. While there were no major winnings, the experience was fun and educational. The students also got a behind-the-scenes look at the race judges (stipes) in action and observed the coordination of camera angles and race footage from the media van. A big thank you to Zain from Gold Circle for ensuring BSET Academy had box seats for the races.
Hands-On Learning at the Rehabilitation Centre
Our rehabilitation center continues to be a hub of activity and learning. This month, students treated horses with wounds, tendon, and ligament damage. These cases provide invaluable hands-on experience and learning opportunities for our students, enhancing their practical skills and knowledge.
Beth’s Visit to South Africa: The students perspective
Beth’s visit to South Africa began with a delightful weekend breakfast with the team. This initial meeting set a positive tone for the days ahead as we engaged in productive brainstorming sessions, marking the start of our journey into myofascial kinetic lines. The energy in the room was palpable, as we all felt the excitement of exploring new territories in our field.
Monday – Wednesday (15 July – 17 July): Deep Dive into Myofascial Kinetic Lines: The early part of the week was dedicated to intensive team research on myofascial kinetic lines and their intricate relationship to SUMCHI strokes and the HUBS they interact with. Each day was filled with insightful ETT and SUMCHI lessons, where we learned the art of allocating and marking HUB spots. The hands-on approach was particularly engaging, as we practiced treating according to the indications given by the equine.
Thursday 18 July: Supporting the Zambian Polocrosse Team: Thursday was a highlight, as we had the opportunity to SUMCHI horses for the Zambian polocrosse team, who were competing in the World Cup. Watching their warm-ups and team-building exercises gave us a deeper appreciation for the sport and the critical role our healing techniques play in enhancing the horses’ performance and well-being.
Friday 19 July: Successful SUMCHI Clinic at Silkwood Riding School: The week culminated in a SUMCHI clinic at the Silkwood riding school. It was a resounding success, with many young riders showing great interest in the SUMCHI technique. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and it was rewarding to see them eager to learn and apply what they had observed. The clinic was not just an educational experience for the young riders but also a testament to the growing recognition and appreciation of our work.
Beth’s visit was a whirlwind of learning, application, and inspiration. We are grateful for the time spent together and look forward to building on the foundation we’ve laid during this remarkable week.
Beth is currently in Canada and the USA sharing her SUMCHI technique with other equine enthusiasts in the field.
Welcoming Future Students
BSET Academy also welcomed two work experience students and two future students who will be joining the academy in 2025. This is an exciting development as we continue to grow and prepare the next generation of equine professionals. Applications are open for students interested in joining BSET Academy in 2025.
July has truly been a month of learning, excitement, and growth. We look forward to the adventures and experiences the coming months will bring. Thank you to everyone who made this month memorable and enriching for our students.
